Job Requirements and Duties Related to Careers In Homeopathy

By: Crystal Ann

There are many healthcare practitioners that have been studying the effects of homeopathy. You can find quite a bit of information about careers in this industry, as well as the type of salary that they are going to make once their training is complete.

People that finish this training will become what is called a naturopathic practitioner, an individual that specializes in homeopathy and homeopathic medications. These people must complete medical school, yet naturopathic practitioners will do this at a naturopathic medical school instead. These physicians will specialize in the application of remedies related to homeopathy, all the while attending the School of Natural Health Sciences to complete their coursework.

Essential Information You Should Read

Holistic remedies are prescribed by those that focus on homeopathy, specifically treating medical problems that people may be facing. In the US, homeopathic medication is often a primary focus of naturopathic doctors, those standard medical doctors may also recommend homeopathic treatments as well. Those in this industry will receive a professional doctorate for this particular career, and they will also be required to have licensure to utilize these medications.

Current Career Options

Both standard physicians and naturopathic doctors are going to see patients on a regular basis, diagnosing illnesses and treating them with specific remedies. However, the focus of each type of doctor is going to be different because homeopathy teaches something far different from what you would learn at a traditional medical school.

What Is a Naturopathic Doctor?

Those that become a naturopathic practitioner must graduate from an accredited naturopathic 4-year school, a place that will allow them to learn about alternative and traditional medicine. Once they graduate, they must pass a licensing exam, yet not every state is going to regulate naturopathic practices. Those that are in a state that will license naturopathic doctors may have other requirements, and this can differ state-by-state.

Every naturopathic medicine program, specifically the homeopathic portion, will be divided up between classical and practical homeopathy, typically originating from the foundation of homeopathic studies, plus there will be the exploration of additional information on prescribing certain homeopathic remedies per the Homeopathic Materia Medica. All of the students are likely to do a substantial amount of clinical work that is hands-on.

Overview of Physicians

Traditional medical practitioners will also go to a four-year medical school; however, they will never be introduced to any type of homeopathic curriculum. If they do want to add homeopathy to what they can make available, they can consider taking CME courses that can supplement what they are learning. Traditional physicians are required to be licensed in all states; they are also required to pass what is called the US medical licensing exam.

Homeopathic Methodology Explained

These are holistic methods, ones that are designed to fit the lifestyle of the patient, rather than address individual symptoms that they may be experiencing. They will address many different factors including their sleep schedule, the amount of exercise that they do, their diet, and will also focus on their well-being when they are prescribing remedies which can differ from patient to patient.

Homeopathy is specifically designed to help a person’s body heal on its own, stimulating their innate ability to resist disease, thus helping them to come back to health naturally. The homeopathic remedies that are created are extremely diluted, and the reason they are able to work is because of what is called the memory of water principal. In fact, the more that it is diluted, they believe that it will work in a much more efficient manner, all the way down to the point where the base substance is no longer there.

Certification Information

In order to get national certifications, there are standards that have been set in the homeopathic industry. This will include certifications from the ABH and homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians. For people that are in Canada, as well as the US, the Council On Homeopathic Certification may also be involved.

What Is Their Average Salary?

The salary of typical homeopathic practitioners is not something that is easy to find simply because it is a multifaceted treatment approach that is used by homeopathic doctors in many different ways. For example, the BLS indicates that surgeons and physicians average a little less than $200,000 a year, whereas homeopathic doctors will make right around $85,000.

Physicians that are required to be licensed in all states are different from homeopathic practitioners which will only need to be licensed in several of them. The certification process for homeopathy involves several different organizations. Both professions are thought to be on the rise in regard to popularity based upon job growth reports.
